Thank you Openrice.com for the invite to join the mooncakes tasting event, so I could have the opportunity to taste different interesting mooncakes.
Creativity and Newness are always desire, particularly in Hong Kong where you can always find interesting elements everywhere at anytime. It could be in the form of a product, a painting, a window display etc. When it comes to food, creativity exist in the form of presentation, a new twist of ingredients and a merge of cultures. In today's event, we were asked to try 10 different kinds of creative mooncakes from 9 different stores, and to comment on the creativity as well as the taste of those mooncakes
The editor categorised the mooncakes into four categories, as follows.
Chocolate - Vero Chocolate, Coco
Chocolate
Glenmorangie Whisky
Vero Chocolate $188/2 (10/10)
Coating
Dark chocolate coating, mildly bitter around 55% darkness I guess.
Interior
Very flavourble taste, especially with the whisky paste. The whisky taste was not strong but with a flavourable taste and aroma. The texture was rather interesting, kind of like Bonjella but in a good way.
Overall
Love how they fused the whisky paste into the chocolate, but was quite pricey.
Crunchy Mooncake
Coco) $88 (7/10)
Coating
Rather hard in texture.
Interior
With a strong hazelnut taste as well as milky taste, the filling was rather sweet in taste. There were crunchy bits mixed into the chocolate paste.
Overall
Wasn't particularly special as this tasted very similar to the one Awefully Chocolate offered in last Mid-Autumn Festival. Price was competitive when compared to Vero Chocolate.
Floral
Chocolate coating
Do not ever follow their chocolate melting instruction! Our first attempt to melt the chocolate for 3 minutes in medium heat ended up burning the chocolate. Our next trial was successful and we only took 10 seconds. Furthermore, the chocolate tasted horrible, so you might just ignored it.
Coating
No glutinous taste and with floury texture. Bad!
Interior
Cheesecake was thick and heavy in texture. It wasn't quite pleasant to finish the cake as it was very filling. The strawberry filling in the middle was pathetic and tasted sour.
Overall
The gimmick is a total failure, the low quality chocolate melting process is complicated. $58 is a waste of money, do not attempt the product.
Coating
Texture was chewy enough but had no glutinous taste.
Interior
A strong green bean taste and only mildly sweet. The jelly-like lychee filling in the core tasted very refreshing. Pretty nice.
Overall
Top three in the moocakes trial ranked by taste. Very competitive price and tasted good.
Coating
Horribly thick and heavy in texture, no chewiness at all.
Interior
Green bean paste was less sweet than white bean paste. No red wine or cherry taste at all.
Overall
I suggest try Wing Hau's traditional mooncake instead.
Dessert
Coating
Very chewy and light in texture and the only mooncake that had some glutinous taste.
Interior
The taro paste was mildly sweet with a refreshing taste and aroma. The inner coconut paste was very icy and had a strong coconut taste, just like tasting the Vietnamese Coconut Cake!
Overall
Nonetheless 大班 is still the King of glutinuous mooncake who can offer the best cake texture and taste. It was also The only mooncake that i found scrumptious enough to take another piece.
Coating
Not chewy enough and a bit thick.
Interior
Strong almondly tasted with bits of almond across the smooth paste.
Overall
Best looking interior overall. Taste was nice even I don't like almond at all.
Coating
Horribly thick and heavy in texture, no chewyness at all.
Interior
White bean paste was mildly sweet amd milky. The turtle jelly processed no taste on palette but revealed its distinguish taste upon swallowing. interesting!
Overall
it was the most creative product of the night judging how they Chinese element into a twisted mooncake product. However I wonder how its sales would be as I personally would not buy one and try.
Traditional
Coating
Thick and heavy in texture.
Interior
Thick and hard in texture. Mildly sweet with a slight bitter taste but had no pu er taste at all.
Overall
Had the most traditional mooncake look, taste and aroma, but with the worst texture.
Coating
Quite chewy but still tasteless.
Interior
The only mooncake that has a salty yolk inside. The sweet potato taste wasn't strong and was over dominated by the yolk taste.
Overall
I personally reckon the sweet potato tasted rather weird with the salty egg and didn't like it.
TO CONCLUDE...
I was pretty full after tasting all these mooncakes. To be very honest I only like traditional mooncakes. By traditional, I mean the lotus paste with a single yolk. However it was a very nice tasting experience, and if I am to buy a glutinous skinned mooncake, i would definitely go for 大班!
