My first encounter with Mango shaved ice was a few years ago in Ice Monster, Taipei where I fell straight in love with it. The reason why Taiwanese shaved ice is delicious and addicting is because of its lovely texture which is very different from the traditional crushed ice. MangoChaCha, a popular shaved ice dessert shop from Taiwan has recently made its stop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong and so I paid a visit.
Located on Hart Avenue, the brightly orangy MangoChaCha can be easily observed from afar. With approximately 30 seatings, expect a small wait during after-dinner hours. The dessert house was extremely cold which I felt like I went into a walk in fridge. This might be a way to prevent their shaved ice from melting, but I do not like it.
As expected, the MangoChaCha Snowflake Ice - HKD58 is utterly delicious. The thick layer of snowflake ice is made with milk and Irwan Mango, which is light and mellowy in texture with a tangy mango flavour. Toppings include diced Irwan mango, condensed Milk and a scoop of Mango ice cream. You just can't stop digging in.
Salt is highly recommended for the snowflake ice, which sounds weird but once you tried, you can't stop adding! The salt incredibly elevates the sweetness of the mango!

I also tried Love is Air (Mango Soufflé) - HKD 58 which is a limited edition dessert available only in Hong Kong. The soufflé was fluffy and airy with mild mango flavour. The portion was rather tiny though. It took 20 minutes to bake and we cleared it in a second.
I actually think MangoChaCha's snowflake ice tasted better than Ice Monster's version. The use of Irwan Mango which the fruit is naturally sweeter in taste and stronger in flavour than the average mango in the market, totally boost the flavour of the snowflake ice at MangoChaCha.
If you happen to dine around Tsim Sha Tsui, don't forget to stop by MangoChaCha and grab a bowl of their infamous shaved ice to share with your friends! Go soon before Winter arrives!
