Shabushabu and sukiyaki were once a fad two or three years ago, now the heat has gone down but there are still lovers around. Nabe One is a new shabushabu and sukiyaki shop at Tsim Sha Tsui, a branch shop after a successful launch of the main branch at Tuen Mun. Nabe One is also under the same group as Sushi One, Monster Sushi and baby Cafe.
With all these shabushabu and sukiyaki shops all around Hong Kong, Nabe One stands out by offering over than 50 kinds of food at their buffet counter for their shabushabu and sukiyaki. What's more, Nabe One has two froyo machines offering daily flavour Froyo and ice-cream. One other attribute I like about Nabe One is that their shop is very spacious for us to move around.
The ordering method is pretty much the same like other's Shabushabu places, just simply pick either shabushabu or sukiyaki, then pick the broth if you opt for shabushabu and finally choose the type of beef to share for the whole table. There are four price points for four different beef qualities, from US Beef, US Supreme Beef, Japanese Wagyu and Japanese Supreme Wagyu. The Japanese Pork is the same for all choices.
Shabushabu Broth
We tried four broths tonight and I will give a brief comments to all that I had tried. Korean Kimchi Soup is a mildly spicy broth with a weak kimchi taste, there is no kimchee in the broth. The Scallop Soup is quite nice with a fresh and sweet taste of seafood. Wagyu Spicy Miso Soup is a bit spicier than the Korean Kimchi Soup but still tastes pretty mild with no beef taste.

Tomato Pork Bone Soup was the favourite of the night, the soup has a strong taste of tomato and is very sweet. Lastly the beautiful Salmon Soy Milk Soup has a sweet salmon taste and mild milk taste, which is pretty nice too. I would recommend the Tomato Pork Bone Soup and the Salmon Soy Milk Soup for shabushabu.

Beef Taste and Texture Comparison
The four beef qualities available at Nabe One are US Beef, US Supreme Beef, Japanese Wagyu and Japanese Supreme Wagyu.
The beautifully marbled Japanese Supreme Wagyu has the most tender texture. With its sparkling marble fat distribution, It is very creamy with smoothing fats and has the strongest beef taste of all. The Japanese Wagyu is also tender with mild creaminess, but has no beef taste.

The Japanese Pork although has a beautiful fat distribution was obviously the least favourite on the table as there was leftovers. It has a strong gamey taste and is rough even with a good fat distribution.
Sukiyaki
It was recommended to pair Japanese Supreme Wagyu with sukiyaki. When the Wagyu is cooked, it is dipped it into the nicely beaten egg yolk to consume. The now shinning Wagyu with a strong taste of sukiyaki and smoothing egg yolk taste heavenly together! Japanese does know how to appreciate food.
Assorted food at counters
There are a lot of different food at the buffet counters, mushrooms, meatballs, vegetables, tofu, sweet corns, noodles etc. Nabe One probably has the most variety of meatballs even in comparison with local cantonese hotpot places.
There are the classic fun types like the lobster ball, cheese stuffed fish ball, roe stuffed fish ball, but the two I found most special are the Spicy pork meat ball and the shrimp fish ball imported from Japan. The spicy pork meatball is not particularly spicy, but it is very savoury. The shrimp fish ball is something I have never tried before, it has a strong shrimp taste but is quite salty in taste.
The pasta is also an amazing pair with the sukiyaki, especially the one Nabe one offers which is very eggy.
Wagyu Beef Fried Rice and Beef Curry
The wagyu beef fried rice is said to be amazing, to me it is just okay. The beef curry tastes very homey to me, like curry that you can make at home. Definitely not a curry that is comparable with Izumi or Coco Curry etc.
I personally recommend US beef for Shabushabu and Japanese Supreme Wagyu Beef for Sukiyaki. For the mid range beef, don't even bother ordering them. Either go meaty with Shabushabu or fatty melting, creamy Wagyu with sukiyaki. Or you can top a plate of Japanese Supreme Wagyu for shabushabu as it was nice with shabushabu too. Supreme Wagyu simply tastes much, MUCH nicer with sukiyaki!

I have tried this one at last weekend when I read this recommandation in your web. This is a good recommondation (espically suit for 2 ppls for hotpot due to 2ppls per table is hardly to enjoy the hotpot from outside). The price is reasonable and you can pick either the general to supreme package. I choose the $168 package and the beef quality is good, and the other food from the buffet bar is also nice.
ReplyDeleteOnly one little negative cmmts is the japanese sesame dressing not thick enough, be coz I think the sesame dressing is the perfect match with the beef......
Dear Patrick,
DeleteSame reason that I missed your comment here, super sorry! I have always enjoy hotpot with 2 ppl! What kind of hotpot do you prefer? Japanese ones or Chinese ones? There are a few spicy chicken hotpot that are great if you love spicy!
