The popular French creperie Fleur de Sel has recently opened a new take away concept creperie, Grain de Sel in the Sheung Wan neighbourhood. The new Grain de Sel offers traditional French galettes and crepes made with a new recipe and in a special machine to make take away feasible! Fans can now enjoy quality galettes anywhere they want!
The takeaway Creperie lies right beneath the stairs of Huller Street, next to La Rotisserie. Drooling aroma of buttery crepes and roasted chicken permeated the street, creating a French corner in Sheung Wan. Grain de Sel is furnished in a French fair with parts of Fleur de Sel brought into the store.
The story behind Gain de Sel is made into a one page comic with style quite similar to Tin Tin. The story can be seen on a large display board at the creperie and on the fancy galette takeaway boxes that you would want to collect.
The secrets of the takeaway galette lies on the new recipe that owner and Michelin Chef Gregory Alexandre found and brought back from France but also from a special grill machine with galette sealing function. Chef Gregory told me Icecream can be seal inside without melting!! Yet this machines looks pretty similar to the typical Hongkie sandwich griller don't you think so?
I could not go to Chef Gregory's restaurant without ordering the off-the-menu The Speculoos. I know I should have some savoury galette first but I could not resist this devishly yummy sweet crepe. If you have not had SPECULOOS before, ordered it and you will get addicted like me.
The Complete is the most traditional flavour that Gain de Sel offers which includes ham, emmental cheese and egg. I was surprised by how crispy the galette becomes with this new recipe and from the method of cooking. It tasted totally different from the traditional galette, this version is MUCH crispier. The combining flavours of tangy ham, savoury emmental cheese and toasted egg were amazeball.
The Homemade Salted Caramel was slightly disappointing as the caramel sauce was very runny and tasted rather buttery and on the sweet side. I like caramel sauce that is thicker.
The price point at Gain de Sel is fair and affordable. The savoury crepes priced between HKD50 - HKD90, while the sweet ones priced between HKD25 - HKD50. The baguettes on the other hand are priced at HKD50. Lunch sets are also available, offering a Complete Galette or a baguette sandwich with a drink at HKD68. Yet I reckon the portion might be too tiny for men, perhaps they could introduce another lunch set which can top a sweet crepe at an additional price. If not customer might go get a chicken to fill their stomach out.
