Another lovely patisserie baby Mon Cher is opening in Hong Kong! Originated from Osaka Japan, baby Mon Cher is launching its first cake shop in Sogo, Causeway Bay on 24th April, 2013. With its celebrity-famous Dojima Roll, I am expecting a crazy roll waves in Hong Kong in the coming weeks. I was invited to the press release/ launch party today to witness the joy of its expansion, and am excited to try the Dojima Roll.
baby Mon Cher is the sister cake shop of Patisserie Mon Cher. Mon Cher was founded in 2013 by Ms Mike Kim in Dojima, Osaka's most hectic business district. Mon Cher (meaning My Love) was originally named "Mon chou chou" (meaning My Favourite). The name was changed to celebrate the 10th anniversary and also to mark a new beginning for the company.
With no fancy plan, Ms Kim created the single roll cake merely by cost. Long story short, Ms Kim was trying to figure a way to satisfy the demand when her patisserie first launched. She came up with the idea of single rolling which uses less dough as well as saving rolling time, which results in today's Dojima Roll. A simple wit she made successfully changed the perception of roll cake from the transitional European style to her now famous single rolled Dojima Roll.
What makes Dojima Roll special is Mon Cher's special chantilly recipe. The cream was especially sourced in Hokkaido, where several sources are blended to create a unique fresh cream, which is only available to Mon Cher. The cream is brought back to a milk production firm in Osaka, where fine quality milk was made.
Mon Cher invited two of their chefs over to the launch party in Hong Kong to demonstrate the making of the chantilly and the Dojima Roll. The chantilly was manually whipped, spread onto a sponge cake and gently wrapped to form the Dojima Roll. It was then meticulously decorated with whipped cream, fresh fruits and sugar tiara! This probably is the most beautiful roll cake I have ever since in my life.
Baby Mon Cher is launching quite a range of products over to Hong Kong. Ranging from the celebrity famous Dojima Roll in both original and Belgian flavour, 4 types of cut cakes, Happy Pouch, Cheese cake and a series of fancy cakes which I will go through below.
The Dojima Roll is sparklingly beautiful with the golden yellow cake and snow white chantilly cream. The sponge cake is moist and dense. The most exquisite element is the chantilly, which is silky smooth with a lovely taste of Hokkaido milk. What's more it is only mildly sweet. No wonder the Dojima Roll is a killer!
An elegant cut cake topped with a strawberry mousse and a Papillon-shaped chocolate. A cute variation from the Dojima Roll. The cream is differ from the Dojima Roll (since the unique chantilly cream is only applied to Dojima Roll), but still very smooth and tasted slightly sweeter than the chantilly cream.
A pretty cut cake resembling a tiara with strawberries, grapes and fresh cream. A fruity version from the Dojima Roll.
A special edition with Sanrio, this Mousee au Hello Kitty made my heart skipped a beat. The cake has a smooth milky Hello kitty mousse cake lays on top of a roll cake with a strawberry gelée inside. This is my second favourite after the Dojima Roll!
The chocolate version of the Hello Kitty mousse cake with an orange gelée inside. This mousse cake is slightly too sweet for me, but should be great for sweet chocolate lovers.
The Happy Pouch is a moist sweet dumpling-shaped crepe made with fresh cream and cheese cake. Interesting crepe and worth a try.
Despite the look, the cheese cake was surprisingly delicious! The souffle cheese cake was very light and fluffy souffle with vivid cream cheese taste. I am in love.
Apart from all the pastries mentioned about, baby Mon Cher also offers single layer fancy cakes priced at HKD$240 ~ $250. Special cakes for different occasions are available from time to time, so make sure you check baby Mon Cher's offical website and like their facebook page! (Link available at the bottom of the post.)
The image of Baby Mon Cher as I perceived is very cute with pink as her main theme colour. I could see Baby Mon Cher fits into Hong Kong's market very well. The pricing point is generally acceptable except the Dojima Roll cake which I found is rather pricey with its size. But since the Dojima Roll is delicious, you would not really mind paying the price. I just hope there won't be a crazy line for it. I am happy to see the launch of Baby Mon Cher, as there is one more nice choice for special occasions. Once again baby Mon Cher is opening on 24th April, 2013 in Causeway Bay Sogo, make sure you pay them a visit!

One gentle for Dojima Roll.
