Stack - Lovely Pancake Spot

Price: $$
Cravingness: ★★★★☆

Pancakes! I believe seeking the best pancake in town is always my on-going mission. Pancakes are breakfast essential to me, it could be a great brunch choice, but to be completely honest, I think it is more a breakfast thing than brunch thing. There are several pancakes shops in Hong Kong, but many opens at noon, serving only the lunch, brunch and dinner section. Stack, the pancake tapas bar founded by the twins Caleb and Joshua Ng, who are also behind Common Ground cafe, bringing pancakes into another level, pairing them with all kinds of meats, vegetables and fruits. Another plus point for Stack is that they open at 11am over the weekend, to cater the morning pancake crave! And there we went all the way to Sai Ying Pun just for Stack's pancakes.

Stack is located on 1 Third Street, Sai Ying Pun which is very easy to find. Just remember it is at the beginning and at the corner of Third Street. Look for the bright red "STACK" LED light, it should be eye catching enough for you to spot especially if you come at night.

Stack is a rather tiny restaurant offering approximately 15 seating. There are only bar seating available and are closely place against each other, making no space in between. The restaurant carries a metallic look with black metal bars framing the kitchen and divided the stock inventory above the kitchen, the bar table and stools are all in sturdy stainless steel as well. The combining metal elements, the red LED lights, together with the worn out but colourful geometric floor tiling imbued the restaurant with a nostalgic vibe, which is rather cool to dine in.

Stack also offers cocktail and wine which are hand written on the satin window of the kitchen.

The table was all set up prior to the restaurant opening. the plate and utensil image on the paper table mat is rather cute.

The weekend brunch menu is a one-page easy to read menu with only a few choices available. You can try to ask if the kitchen can make something cater to your taste though. I said that, because we did =P.

The coolest thing we found at Stack might actually be the porcelain wine pourer which Stack uses it as a water container!

I ordered the Organic Tulsi India Green Tea which came out to be a heavy and strong red tea. I don't actually understand what is wrong with Tulsi's green tea, but the normal green tea I had is much more mild and light in taste.

We ordered the All Day Breakfast - HKD138 which I was extremely surprised to see Mr. Smiley Potato again, not ever since I left my high school in UK. Mr. Smiley had a slight crunch to his crust with smooth but bland mash inside. Perhaps they should use New Potatoes to make Mr. Smiley more flavourful. The scramble egg was also a tad bland in flavour. It got the right texture though, it just needed some salt and pepper on it. The bacon was the pretty standard bacon which can't really go wrong. The white sausage was also sadly rather weak in flavour. The ham was however, extremely smokey and savoury which I love.

Hiding underneath the smoky ham is a buttery pancake which was moist, creamy and fluffy.

No breakfast is complete without Hash Brown, so we ordered The Hash - HKD58 on the side. This hash tasted ten times better than Mr. Smiley. This hash was well fried to give a crisp and smokey crust. I love how they added some roughly chopping potato into the mash which gave a better chunky texture to the hash, but still keeping it smooth. There was also some savoury ham bits in it too!

This Fruit Pancake - HKD88 is derived from the Granny Pancake which the scoop of Icecream is replaced by berries and syrup as we only crave for plain pancakes. This pancake tasted very different from the pancake we just had on the All Day Breakfast dish. This pancake was more light and fluffy, like air passing through your mouth! Henry ate a few mouthfull of these and commented he has found his best pancake place in town. Well I love the pancakes in here, but will still look for possible better pancakes! Oh, one more thing, the honey crisps on our pancake were completely burnt, giving a very bitter taste *sob.

We were very curious on how they made their pancakes since I can never make them right even using buttermilk. Henry had the guts to ask and the waiter told us they use ricotta cheese in them! Ahhhhhh, Lemme try next time!

All in all I am contented with the brunch at Stack and would definitely come for dinner sometimes to try Stack's innovative Pancake Tapas Dishes.
