Recently I am obsessed with the Korean drama, You Who Came From the Start. While watching the adorable couple Cheong Song Yi (千頌伊) and Do Min Joon (度敏俊) getting along, there are numerous scenes of Cheong Song Yi indulging on Korean Fried Chicken(KFC), which made me crave for KFC superb madly!!! The one I went tonight, is called ChumChum Mi.
The restaurant is quite hidden in the alley, you have to look for signs to find your way to the restaurant. The restaurant is quite spacious which can accommodate large groups of people, there are also outdoor seating for those who enjoy the breeze. K-POP is constantly playing in the background and also on the TV. Noise level is moderate. Most of the servers here are colleague Korean Girls (part time?), and as the night goes along, more Korean shows up for late dinner and for drinks. ChumChumMi seems to be quite authentic.
We planned to have another round of dinner at Saorae tonight, so we just ordered a serving of Korean Fried Chicken with spicy and sweet sauce and Korean Sushi. To start the night, we ordered Makgeolli - HKD90. The Makgeolli (Korean Rice Wine) was served in a beautiful bowl with a ladle, looking kind of classy!
Complimentary banchan had fishball, marinated beans, kimchi, cucumber and veggie. They were pretty standard and nothing too exciting. Last time when I came to ChumChumMi, they had sweet potato which tasted awesome! I should have requested it.
I ordered the Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) with spicy and sweet sauce. I always love to have my KFC this way, as it gives a sticky and savory coating while the skin is kept crispy. The KFC here was nicely fried with crispy skin, and wow, the sauce was damn spicy and tangy! To cool your burning tongue, ChumChumMi saves you by offering a complimentary plate of sweet radish pickle. If you did not know, sweetness kills spiciness.
If I have to choose between Japanese sushi roll and Korean sushi roll, most of the time I will pick Korean sushi roll. Korean sushi rolls are usually served hot with multiple textures and tastes. Like the one offered from ChumChumMi, there were savory beef, crispy Takuan (radish pickle) and other veggies. I will pick Jap ones only if there is tempura shrimp or tempura soft shell crab in it.
The portion at ChumChumMi is huge, so it is better to come in a large group. You can come in a pair of course, but you will end up with a doggie bag afterwards, like me!
