Sala Thai | Bad Food Nice Decor

It was almost 2 months since I last posted anything, sorry about that. My sister is getting married too soon that I have to keep up my shape, so I have been slimming my ass off lately. Anyway I do occasionally eat out, I was just a bit lazy to update my post. (Oops, busted!)

I went to Element today as I got rather sick hanging around in Causeway Bay. I need some walking space and less Chinese travelers. (Sadly there are lots of them in Element too.) Finally we went to Sala Thai.

The decor in Sala Thai was nice in wood and thai paintings. The restaurant was surprising spacious, the middle session was squared with booster seats. We were allocated to a 2 person booster seats, but it was less comfy and private than those that holds 4 or more people.

P.S. Sorry for my photos' quality, I didn't bring my camera, so the only camera I had on me was my blackberry phone.

1) Combination Platter $98
From left to right - the Combination Platter consisted of 4 single-boned chicken wings, 2 Tod Man Pla, 2  Golden Shrimp Cake and 2 Vegetarian Spring rolls served with homemade sweet chili plum sauce and honey-based (?) non spicy sauce.

Golden Shrimp Cake - Very crispy skin and soft spongy filling. The shrimp taste is strong. Nice cake.

Tod Man Pla (Deep-fried Fish Cakes) - Same as the Golden Shrimp Cake which possessed a crispy friend skin. The filling was more complex and tasteful with some exotic spices added into it which made the Tod Man Pla tasted fresh. The fish filling had a strong fish taste and a spongy texture. Delicious!

Single-boned chicken wing - Despite oiliness, I couldn't taste anything else. I always think it is difficult to mess up fried chicken wings but apparently I was wrong.

Vegetarian Spring Roll - Very Chinese, average dim sum quality. Highly NOT recommended.

Tomatoes & Cucumber - These two were a joke to taste. I regretted eating them the second I put them into my mouth. I wonder if they replaced it dish after dish. Dry, flat and disgusting.

** If you would like an appetizer here, you can just ordered Tod Man Pla & Golden Shrimp Cake. Platter is NOT recommended.

2) Chicken Red Curry $70
The portion of the red curry was a bit pathetic, but should fill 2 people fine. As you can see from the pictures, there are chicken, green beans, my favourite Makhuea Suai with spices - Galangal, lemon grass, fresh basils and garlic.

Red curry is the hottest among green and yellow curry, although Thai curry isn't that spicy, we were still disappointed there were ZERO spiciness in the pot. The red curry was rather sweet with a strong coconut milk taste. Other than that, the pot was surprisingly flavourless despite the fact that there were so many spices in it.

Chicken was quite tough in texture, flavourless. My favourite Makhuea Suai (Thai Eggplant) which was supposed to capture the essence of the curry taste, has failed to capture anything since the curry itself wasn't tasteful at all. The texture was a bit on the soft side too.

3) Baked King Prawn and Vermicelli Pot $176
OH MY GOSH, I didn't know this pot was priced at $176 until I had my bill lol. It wasn't particularly pricey, but it was much more expensive than all other dishes in comparison.

The dish was a total bizarre when served. Just look at the top picture, the first thought in my head was WTH - where were the 2 appealing king prawns shown on the menu? Upon digging into the pot, I fished my two king prawns back to surface and here they are as below. What were the chef thinking? Didn't they know the look of the dish had a great impact on the overall taste and experience?

Anyway, the pot was disappointing - it was very bad indeed. The only nice thing about the pot was the flesh of the king prawns was kept tender, yet it was pretty much tasteless. The Vermicelli was horribly made. It was heavily flavoured and was quite damp to my palette. The Vermicelli also weight quite heavily, apparently left too long to serve.

After the two disappointing main dishes, I had lost interested in their desserts. I simply couldn't stand too much disappointment all at once. Let's call it a night then.

You know what's funny. I was planning to post this on Openrice.com and found there were 21 sad faces dominating the votes. It might not been all helpful but definitely can serve as a reference. Afterall, the 21 sad faces did signify something.

  2. @Melissa Ya... I should at least take people's comments as reference. I just wouldn't know a restaurant can go as bad as Sala Thai which looks pretty decent in a place like Element.
