PHO - We Need Some Authentic PHO!

Having a very artistic afternoon, we went for Art Jaming in Lai Chi Kok. The lesson finished at 5pm, then we decided to head for an early dinner at Tsim Sha Tsui and go watch Narnia.

My friend said she had once encountered a pretty nice Vietnamese restaurant in Ashley Road and decided to bring me there. Upon arriving Ashley Road, I saw the logo of Pho Vietnamese Restaurant and I suddenly realised I had seen this logo in Causeway! Finally we found some nice Vietnamese Restaurant that is more authentic (although not totally) Vietnamese than Green Cottage. (Click to read review on Green Cottage)

We arrived the restaurant at around 615pm, since it was still early for dinning hours, the restaurant was rather empty. The indoor decor was nice, with green bamboos and Vietnamese grass hats hanging all around the place. The main colour was oatmeal, yellow and green, which create a natural and comfy feeling.

1) Steak, Flank Pho - $39
Vietnamese Fresh Beef Noodle is my must order dish in any Vietnamese restaurant. Before I started blogging, I only knew the food that I was eating is delicious but I never paid real attention to the details, hence I could not recalled how the authentic Vietnamese noodles is like. However I could definitely pointed out Green Cottage's noodles was no where close to authentic, since it used Chinese flat noodles for their bowls.

Anyway my point is Pho should be offering authentic Vietnamese Pho. The flat noodles were thin and delicate. The thickness was similar to a single layer of an onion. Being delicated, the noodles was smooth and al dente to chew. The noodles were in generous amount, I could vaguely remembered

On the other hand the beef a.k.a. steak and the flank were tasty. The beef was very thinly sliced and cooked quickly in the bowl. The flank were even better, it was more tender and tasteful than the beef since it absorbed the essence of the soup.

The Spicy Triplets!
Speaking of the soup, I couldn't help but to paste the spicy triplet sauces on top of the paragraph. Many of the expacts usually have their Vietnamese bowl with the Seafood Sauce in red and the spicy sauce in orange. Mixing the two sauces altogether with the broth brought the taste to another level. The broth itself was very tasteful with a strong beef taste and was very smooth with the sinful oil floating all around the bowl. Add the sauces complexed the taste but the end combining taste was exceptionally better than to have to broth in plain. Hence I highly recommend any of you to try the broth with the seafood and spicy sauce together with the noodles.

2) Fried Rice with Shrimp Paste, Sweet Pork and Egg - $52
Shrimp paste, a paste that I rarely tasted but was very interested to know its taste. With a plain description of the dish on the menu, I consulted the waitor about this fried rice. As soon as he mentioned about the 'Vietnamese Style Preserved Sausage', I decided to have the dish, since now there were two elements on the dish that I really want to know how they tasted like.

As I waited for the dish, I watched the waitress serving other customers' dishes and I found all Pho's dishes were meticulously prepared. Hence when my Shrimp paste Fried Rice came on my desk, I was made elated by its outlook. I just wish the egg was a sun fried version.

Shrimp Paste was my main interested in the dish, so I immediately tried the rice out. The rice was made just right to give a chewy texture. There were also bits and pieces of eggs, cucumber, meats etc in the fried rice to give a complex texture. The rice was slightly spicy and possessed a strong delicious taste, and finally here I knew the taste of Shrimp Paste. The taste of shrimp paste was real strong and tasted extremely well with the rice. I would definitely get some shrimp paste for my own home cooking for now on.

Next is the preserved sausages. The preserved sausages were thinly sliced, and looked less fat than the traditional Chinese preserved sausages. The texture was quite tender and solid, like having Roasted Barbecue Pork rather than preserved sausages. The sausages was less salty than Chinese's ones and contained a bit of sweetness with it. I personally love the Chinese style more, but the Vietnamese one tasted delicious too. The pork on the other hand was nothing special at all, hence we didn't finished it in the end.

3) Vietnamese Style Fried Chicken Wings with Garlic and Butter - $48/4 pcs
Fried food is everyone's evil best friend, you love it and hate it, resist it but indulge in it. Here, recalling the tastefulness of the butter wings at Green Cottage, we ordered the same dish in Pho Vietnamese Restaurant too. The butter wings, which supposed to be an appetizer, came out like 10 minutes after we polished our noodle bowl and fried rice. I wonder if it was because they were really made to order or the restaurant was just not fully prepared yet since we came at 630pm that night.

The dish was served with some lime. The chicken wings were all madly crispy, which was delightful to taste. The crumbly layer was different from the one that Green Cottage offers. Green Cottage's one was obviously made from bread crumbs, while Pho's chicken wings had a translucent yellowish crumble layer on them. Judging the outlook, Pho's chicken wings seemed to be really fried with butter. The crispy translucent layer didn't really posses any butter taste, but the lime helped in and gave a nice sourness to the wings. Despite the crispy skin, the chicken itself was very tender to taste.

TO CONCLUDE...

Although I am no expertise in Vietnamese cuisine, I personally reckon Pho Vietnamese Restaurant did offer much authentic dishes than Green Cottage. Knowing their main branch is in Causeway Bay did save us from deciding which Vietnamese Cuisine to go in the future. However I do love Green Cottage's Chinese style's Butter Chicken Wings more, I guess their local adaption is very successful then.
