When we are looking for Phoenix Rolls, we would usually think of big commercial brands like Kee Wah Bakery in Hong Kong or Macau brands like Choi Heong Yuen or Koi Kei. Despite some local petite shops at places like Lee Yuen Moon, there is also another local brand called Gu Fah Bakery. Gu Fah bakery offers a great range of Chinese Bakery that are made in Hong Kong which are perfect for gifts or as souvenir to family and friends.
I went today under their invitation to try out their products. Located at the City Walk in Tsuen Wan, the mall is 10 minutes walk from the MTR, pretty inconvenient. The shop has a classy Chinese setup with deep brown wooden shelves for products display. There is also a small stand at the door front for distributing products for tasting.
Gu Fah Bakery is also famous for their egg pancakes, unfortunately their previous baking chef left and his position is yet to be replaced. No luck in trying their egg pancakes :( So I went to discover their other bakery products instead and brought some home to share with my family.
I got an assorted tin with Almond Pies, White Sesame Pies, Black Sesame Pies and Roast Pork Pies.
Almond Pie - The beautiful almond pie is made with 7 layers of Mille feuille topped with a layer of sugar coating and few pieces of almond. The almond taste was mild. The sugar coating is too sweet for my liking. The pie is soft and not crispy enough.
The Black and White Sesame Cake is a buttery cookie with strong roasted sesame taste. Really yum!
The Phoenix roll has a mild buttery and eggy taste when compare to other brands. It is pretty flakey and crispy in texture. The coconut shreds are pretty thick and rough in texture but the coconut taste is strong and nice.
The Wife Cake tastes very different from another other Wife Cake that I had before. It lacks of the typical chewiness and is not sweet at all. It has a strong taste of Winter Melon and a mild taste of coconut. Perhaps it is the style from Gu Fah Bakery, but I do not like it.
The Almond Cake was very yummy with a fluffy and light texture and a strong almond taste!
It is great to see a local bakery offering Chinese traditional food, it must be difficult to compete with big brands. I personally reckon there are much rooms for Gu Fah Bakery to improve. I would only recommend the Roast Pork Pie, the Black and White Sesame Cake and Almond Cake for now.

White Sesame Pie - A similar construction as the almond pie, the top layer of almond is replaced by a spread of white sesame. Same as the almond pie, the sugar coating is too sweet for me but the sesame taste is strong. The pie is flakey but not crispy enough.
Black Sesame Pie - Same comments as the white sesame pie, strong sesame taste, overly sweet and lack of crispiness.
Roast Pork Pie - The Roast Pork Pie is the only salty product I got from Gu Fah Bakery. The pie is very buttery with Shredded minced pork taste within the pie.
