Yorkshire Pudding - Culinary Battle for Great Britain

With the Scottish Independence Referendum approaching on 18th September 2014, Yorkshire Pudding, the British Gastropub at the heart of soho, has held a culinary battleground between Scotland and Britain. With no political grounds, Yorkshire Pudding has designed two unbiased menus to accentuate the very best of both countries' cuisine. Get you palate ready for the battle and vote your favourite one!

The culinary battle was held at the private function room at Yorkshire Pudding. As one could expect, the private room can't get more British. Furnished in caramel woods, deep buttoned burgundy sofas with British flag cushion and many more decorations here and there, creating a British like living room. What's even better is the big screen in the middle of the room where you can play football games or simply a great movie. It would be a great night hanging out in here with a brunch of friends.



Despite a separate menu for food, there is one for drinks too! I only tried the Scotland's menu tonigth as the Britain's menu sounds rather ordinary. I started with a glass of Whisky Mac - HKD96. The Whisky Mac had a lovely caramel aroma, very mellow with a fruity, caramel and woody notes. It was soft on the pallate but strong on the throat.


We began with an appetiser platter from both the menus. We did not savour the Britain oysters tonight as the manager said they were not very fresh. It's good to know only the freshest ingredients are served at Yorkshire Pudding.


The Smoked Salmon Carpaccio - HKD148, on the Scotland menu, was a rather pleasant surprise. I like how it tasted more savoury than the normal smoked salmon and left my mouth swirling with a lovely salmon oil. The quail Scottish egg was tasty but I want a thick layer of meat warping.


The Scottish Oysters - HKD148 was a small sized oyster with sweet and briney note. It was smooth to taste and left a rubbery feeling at your throat.


I was a bit surprised to see Prawn Cocktail - HKD148 on the Britain menu, as it is more an American dish to me, The shrimp was meaty but tasted rather bland. The salad was dry without sauce. So if this is the British version, I would actually prefer the American one.


The Aberdeen Angus Beef Tenderloin - HKD328 was cooked perfectly medium rare with a pinkish center. It was very tender and juicy with ample flavour. I especially love the red wine sauce which compliments the steak very well.



The Sheep Shagger Ale - HKD98 is brewed in the Highland of Scotland. A lovely full body ale with fruity flavour and refreshing aftertaste


As one of my best Fish & Chip restaurant in Hong Kong, Yorkshire Pudding's Classic Beer Batter Cod Fish - HKD168 is a must try. The cod had extremely crispy batter and succulent and flavourful flesh. The chips were however a bit boring with not much flavour to it. It would probably taste better if it is made more crispy (although the average Fish & Chips in UK served soggy chips lol).


I also tried a bit of the Roasted Beef with Yorkshire Pudding - HKD228 which would be great to kill a crave for the sunday roast. The roasted beef was cooked to perfection with a pinkish centre, leaving the meat juicy and flavourful.


We also ordered some Yorkshire puddings and black puddings for sides. The Yorkshire Pudding was raised with a low airy centre and high crisp sides but tender as a wafer within. This soaked up the gravy sauce easily and thus was a great yorkshire pudding of my liking.


So far I have only had Black Pudding at Flying Pan and Yorkshire Pudding, yet I am sure the black pudding at Yorkshire Pudding tasted much better. This version held a milder flavour but much more moist than the one at Flying Pan.


Dessert round, here we first had one of the most traditional Britain dessert at all times, the Eton Mess - HKD68. The beautifully messy Eton Mess is a lovely dessert with some addicting crisp, featherlight meringue and loads of sweet strawberries heavily lathered with smooth cream.


The Apple Crumble - HKD68 on the Britain menu, should be named apple cheesecake instead as no elements of apple crumble are present on this cake. The cheesecake was nice with ample cheese flavour, and I Iove the how moist and creamy the texture is.


The Dundee Fruit Cake - HKD68, on the Scotland menu, is moist and dense, filled with fruits. The fruit cake reminds me of Christmas.


The Chocolate Shortbread - HKD68, on the Scotland menu, tasted quite shocking, as shortbread to me is biscuit but this dessert tasted something like brownie but with a much flakier texture.


The Battle For Britain menu 2014 is available everyday from 1 Sep to 30 Sep 2014. The course is a nice deal, priced only at $398 for 3 courses with a drink. You can also opt for a la carte, which starters priced at HKD148, Main at HKD168+ and dessert at HKD68.

I am indifference between these two menus as I like the Scottish Oyster, the Aberdeen Angus Beef Tenderloin and the fruit cake but I also like Fish & Chips, the Eton Mess and the 'Apple Crumble'. I guess I will leave the choice to you guys.
