Mikichi - Not Bad Spicy Ramen

Price: $
Cravingness: ★★★☆☆

Being flushed by all these ramen feeds and discussion, I could not withhold my indulgence and went to mikiichi for a spicy bowl of ramen for today's lunch.

Mikichi had a vast variety of ramen available - Hakata, Sapporo, Shoyu, Hakodate, Udon and Soba in both cold and hot broth. Given this wide range, I actually doubt if the quality would be good since most great ramen place that I have been specialised in specific kind of ramen they are great at. I know I should perhaps try their Hakata or Sapporo first, but I just crave for a bowl of spicy ramen right now.

One thing I like about Mikichi is that they have the nori put on a separate wooden container from the bowl. In this way, the crispness of the nori could be kept and you can enjoy the process of tearing the nori up and dumping it into your bowl.

The spicy bowl was aromatic. I ordered it a 2nd degree spiciness out of 3 levels, but the bowl turned out to be only mildly spicy which was disappointing. The broth was a clear broth, quite oily and was not a thick broth that I like. The broth was rather salty and don't have much pork taste into it. I think it was just an average bowl.

The Noodles was cooked al dente and was in great chewiness. The noodles were thin ones but were thicker than Ippudo's ones.

I was expecting some heavenly melting texture from the Pork Belly as it had a thick layer of fats. Yet I was wrong, the fats were just boring solid fat. The thin pork layer was very dry in texture and was bland in taste too. I don't think they have braised the pork long enough.

The Cha Siu was on the thin side so it was pretty dry and lack of texture. Same with the pork belly, the cha Siu was also bland in taste.

My spicy bowl has no egg with it, so I had to order one separately. The egg was flavourful with pretty organy yolk. The yolk had a soft, semi-running texture and was sweet and slightly salty in taste. The yellowed egg white was sweet in taste too. The egg was lovely.

I don't think Mikitai's ramen is anything spectacular, but it was already a good choice around my work area. I might go back and try their other bowl and see if they are of any good.
