Cravingness: ★★★☆☆1/2
Dining at Yardbird can sometimes be frustrating, because it is hard to get a table. Weekday is probably a better time to try Yardbird as it is definitely less crowded. So does Yardbird really live up to the hype? Actually it depends what you are looking for - Food, Drink or Vibe. Food wise, there were several dishes that impressed me. Drink wise, they have an extended drinks list and I love their whisky collection. If you are coming in a party of two, Yardbird is not in romantic settings and might be too noisy for you. While if you come in a big group who also happens love to drink, you will have a great night here.
Yardbird is very much like restaurants in New York, where there is a bar at the entrance, and the dining room is located much inner. Ambiance is lively with loud music. Furnishing as well as the table settings are quite simple. There is an open kitchen at the dining area, probably for yakitori. Waiters are friendly and helpful.
As you might have known, all the yakitori dishes Yardbird offers are chicken related, even if it is named oyster. There are pork dishes available on the side menu, you just have to ask or look around.
Not as refreshing as I thought it would be, the cucumber was seasoned with sesame and miso sauce which was quite sweet for an appetiser. The pine nuts was paired nice with the miso sauce.
This is a highly recommended appetiser to get! The sweet corn tempura was crunchy on the outside, very sweet but savoury at the same time with the salt and pepper seasoning. What a lovely dish!
The wings were nice. It was savoury with a strong taste of shichimi. The skin was grilled crispy which made the wings tasted much better!
The meatball came with a dipping sauce of tare sauce and egg yolk which requires mixing before serving. The meatball tasted ok but the texture was quite soft and fluffy which I dislike. Furthermore the tare sauce was made too salty. The chicken patty as well as the tare sauce was much better in Wai Wai, Causeway Bay.
I have had chicken hearts somewhere before and found it tasted nicer than it sounds. (I know it sounds horrible and FYI the shape looks like a heart too lol) The chicken heart was served with green onions and ginger. It tasted pretty much the same as any chicken thigh but with a stronger chewiness.
We found this funny so we ordered it. The oyster was a part at the chicken hip as explained by our waiter. It was marinated with sea salt and lemon. The oyster was juicy and tender. It was also quite fatty which the oil from fats made it extra yum!
The knee tasted like any of the soft bone chicken skewer you have anywhere but with a strong touch of chewiness. It was marinated with sake and garlic but the taste was not strong.
Freaking foodgasm dish! It tasted very similar to Bon chon chicken which has crispy skin, juicy meats and a lovely special chilli sauce.
My friend told me you can order chicken with the KFC, so we made the request. As said, the chicken tasted very much like Bon Chon Chicken, which is my favourite fried chicken on earth, but Yardbird's fried chicken has more crispy skin!!! The delishness drove me nuts.
While the original cauliflower was another killer! The bon chon magic works even better on the cauliflower!!! The outside was extremely crispy, which the inner was crunchy and mushy at the same time. It tasted like a mashed potato at the first bite but later you feel the crunch of the cauliflower! What a magical KFC!
The Peanut Butter Ice-cream was the only dessert available in the house. My friend had made amazing peanut butter ice-cream before, so I held huge expectation. This Penut Butter ice-cream was very weird to taste, it has a strong peanut butter taste but did not taste like the peanut butter that we are familiar with e.g. Skippy's. The texture was creamy enough, but I just don't like how it is tasted.
The food at Yardbird was not particularly impressive except the KFC and the sweet corn tempura. The KFC Chicken can totally win me over, I finally found a place to satisfy my crave of Bon Chon Chicken in Hong Kong! There are still lots of food that I have not tried on the menu that I feel interested in. Plus the fact that I really love their whisky collection, I can see myself coming back to Yardbird in the nearer future.
