The Korean Fried Chicken hype is not seeing an end. Crazy crowds in Hong Kong does not mind queuing for hours just to get some Fried Chicken into their belly. Red Chicken, located at Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the to go list for Korean Fried chicken after Fairyland and Chicken HOF & soju. Continue reading for my tips for skipping the queue and how I think Red Chicken tasted.
So first thing first, I never (ok rarely) queue anything for more than an hour. As you can see, there wasn't many people waiting in front of Red Chicken right? So my tip here is, go get a drink or two or eat light at somewhere else and then go to Red Chicken for a second round dinner. We came here around 9pm and got seated at 945pm. Does not seems too bad right? At least you don't need to stand at the door and wait for 3 hours. (And yes we actually get a second round drinks next to Red Chicken while waiting :P)
As suggested in their opening hour sign, you can also opt to dine when the restaurant opens, but who starts eating dinner at 5pm?
Red Chicken is very spacious if to compare with other fried chicken restaurants close by. The restaurant is casually setup with wooden tables and wooden brick wall in dim lighting. The noise level is crazily high, I felt like I went into a club. Ear pumping K-POP music is constantly playing at the background, with the MV playing on the big TV screens hanging around the restaurant.
The menu is extended, offering a diverse list of Korean delicacies including a whole page of different sauced fried chicken, stir fried dishes, bulgogi, pancakes, soup, salad etc. What's more exciting is that they don't have their alcohol license yet, so bring your soju and Makgeolli everyone :)
I guess Korean food are designed for sharing, so Red Chicken has it taken care of and served us a stack of colourful plates right after we sat down. Snacks inc. crisps, shredded veggie and pickles were also served.
If you have been reading my blog, you know I simply cannot eat Korean Fried Chicken without spicy sauce. The sole reason that I ordered half original is because Cheon SongYi smacked on too many of the original ones in multiple episodes of You Who Came From The Stars that I wanted to try them without the spicy sauce. The KFC at Red Chicken is disappointingly bad. The skin was not very crispy, the meat was not juicy and not to mention the meat tasted a bit funny. The chilli sauce was not spicy enough in the spicy version as well. I was hugely disappointed. ChumChumMi was way WAY better!
The chicken gizzard was served on a sizzlingly plate and was a great dish to go with our soju! It was savoury with sharp basil aroma. The green peppers was hell spicy, it almost killed me when I had my first bite.
I have never had fish cake soup before and I felt in love! This was ordered by H's Korean Boss, Korean does know it all. The fish cake soup attacked your senses with a drooling aroma of bonito. The lovely sweet bonito soup was infused with white raddish and fish cake flavour. There are lots of veggies in the pot.
Most of the fish cakes tasted amazing, but the pinkish meatball in the middle of the skewer tasted a bit weird, like a ball of flour cake.
I haven't been to Chicken HOF & Soju or Fairyland yet. I will try them sooner or later but just don't expect me to queue for 3 hours just for KFC please.
