Mango Tree - The Best Tom Yum Gnoong in HK

Price: $$$
Cravingness: ★★★☆☆1/2

A shout out to all the lobster lovers out there, a final countdown to Mango Tree's delicious lobster promotion ending on 30th November 2014. If you have not tried (my personally reckoned) best Tom Yum Gnoong in town, the Tom Yum Lobster, you are seriously missing out!!

Mango Tree is a renowned Thai Restaurant offering authentic and traditional Thai food in Bangkok, Thailand which has set foot in Hong Kong since 2001. To celebrate its third successful year in Hong Kong, a special lobster menu along with a lucky draw of 3D2N round trip package to Thailand for two are offered to the foodie fans. Lobster dishes can be commonly found in both Western or Chinese restaurants but in Thai cuisine, that's I have never tried! Feeling quite excited, I joined the lunch tasting hosted by 1957 &Co..

Mango Tree features wood elements in natural tone highlighted with metallic gold frames. Pale green table mat and Thai Orchid flower are placed on the table to complete the Thai ambiance. Reserve your seat by the window for a nice Causeway Bay cityscape view.

We started our lunch with a refreshing but spicy Lobster Pomelo Salad - HKD168 topped with crunchy peanuts. The salad was well seasoned to let the natural flavour of the lobster shines. The salad was rather spicy but was the kind that urges you to take may-be-another-spoon kind of spiciness.

Lobster Cocktail - HKD88 is all about the dressing and this Thai Mayo based dressing is lovely. The sweetness of the Thai Mayo escalated the sweetness of the succulent lobster.

A pretty standard dish at any Thai restaurants but this Char-grilled Pork Neck Fillet, a signature dish at Mango Tree topped a seductive char aroma to the pork neck fillets! The texture was nice with some chewyness, so it wasn't all the way one dimensionally tender.

Cooked to perfection, this Tom Yum Lobster - HKD198 has to be the best that I have had in Hong Kong. The broth had the perfect balance of sweetness and sourness with a sharp herby note and bold spiciness. I have made Tom Yum Gnoong in Chiang Mai, Thailand before but mine was not even close to this one in terms of flavour. The seafood sweetness in the broth was madly heavenly, plus the lobster totally soaked up the essence of the broth. How evil is that?

Came on the desk madly smokey, the Char-Grilled Lobster - HKD268 was however not strong in flavour itself. The side sauce must be used to give some flavour.

I have always love curry served in French Boule, and Mango Tree's version of Lobster Green curry Served in French Boule Bread - HK388 is delectable. The curry itself was creamy, herby and tangy. The lobster absorbed the essence of the curry and delivered great flavour. I love the crispy outer and soft inner contrary texture of the French boule. Eat it while it is still hot!

The Lobster Phad Sanunpral - HKD188 at Mango Tree offers solid flavour but lacked of the wok aroma, as like most of the Thai restaurant in Hong Kong.

The last lobster dish Lobster Basil and Chili Rice Noodles - HKD388 was yet another lovely dish with killing aroma. Think about the ingredients: Lemongrass, onions, shallots, lemon leaves and Thai Rending, you could already imagine how fully packed with flavours this fish is! The Maine lobster here delivered addictingly flavours as well. I cleared all the lobsters here as everyone got full by this time. Yay!

Veg is needed in every meal and this Garlic Baby kale is crisp and garlicky!

Finally comes the dessert. you cannot leave Mango Tree without having their signature Sticky Rice with Mango. Serving white glutinous rice with creamy coconut sauce on top, it can be more authentic!

I love this Sago Pudding, which is another signature dessert at Mango tree. The sweet coconut flavour was just irresistible,

A rather interesting dessert is this Pandan and Strawberry layer cake. A glutinous cake made with actual pandan leaves and strawberry with no additional colouring. The texture of the cake was very cute and gooey, I prefer the pandan flavour more as the strawberry one tasted rather weird to me.

Coconut Ice-cream in Thailand might be the best coconut ice-cream, but Mango Tree is the closest you can get in any Thai restaurants in Hong Kong. Made in house, this coconut ice-cream was yum!

If you have not tried Thai wine before, Mango Tree also offers a special promotion on Monsoon Valley's Colombard and Shiraz wine during their third anniversary. The Thai wine are priced at a great bargain at HKD68 a glass, HKD198 a bottle or HKD168 for a bottomless night. I personally like the white Colombard more, the Shiraz tasted too shallow to me.

On top of all the Thai delicacies, Mango Tree is having a lucky draw of a 3D2N Thailand round trip for two persons return with hotel included! Winner is also given the chance to learn Thai cuisine cooking from Mango Tree founder Mr Pitaya! Dinners only need to spend HKD500 to get a drawing ticket for the event. (HKD1000 have two tickets etc) I am incredibly unlucky for those lucky draw but I want the round trip tickets to Thailand! Let me know if you win and good luck guys!
