Adorable Kumamon Brings Kumamoto Ingredients to Gonpachi

Price: $$$$
Cravingness: ★★★★☆

Kumamon Bear! The extremely adorable Kumamon bear was present at Gonpachi today, as CEO Mr Paul Kwok decided to bring rare ingredients from the land of gourmet - Kumamoto. Hailing from the success of the previous Iwate fair, Gonpachi once again brings another region specialty to Hong Kong (and this time also bring along cute Kumamon bear, well done Gonapachi! LOL), that why I love Gonpachi.

Kumamon was fluffy and fat! Look at his tummy! I squeezed through the crowds and took a picture with him =D!

So let's have the happy Kumamon introduces the ingredients Gonpachi brought back this time.

First is Japanese rices from Kumamoto, as Kumamon being the icon to promote kumamoto, you can see a mug shot of him on the packaging. Gonpachi also brought back Karuma Ebi, Hiougi Scallop, Farmed Tuna, Kumamoto Wagyu Beef, Amakusa Chicken, Sakura Egg, Salted Tomato, Shiitake Mushroom, Long eggplant and many other fruits! Scroll down and check them out yourself!

Being the famous Izakaya in Japan and now in Hong Kong, two types of sake are brought back from Kameman Sake Brewery located in the southwest of Japan. The glass we tried below was mellow and smooth to drink!

"Yukhoe" Spicy Tuna Tartar with Kumamoto Onions and Sesame Seeds - HKD168

Our first dish was one of the best of the night. The spicy tuna tartar was tender and sweet with a spicy finishes from the wasabi sauce. The rice cracker was one of the best rice crackers I have ever tasted! It was extremely crispy with a wonderful toastiness and a hint of saltiness.

Shimaaji Carpaccio with Wasabi Vinaigrette and Dekopon Orange & Rocket Salad - HKD168

The shimaaji carpaccio was juice bursting and fatty with oil swirling on my palate! The wrap ended with a bitter finish from the rocket leaves.

Kumamoto Tomato with Mozzarella Cheese Served with Marinated Onion - HKD188

The mozzarella cheese was creamy and moist but the best of this dish goes to the Kumamoto tomato which was juicy and sweet but also had a distinctive saltiness in it. The raw onions slices were to my surprise sweet in taste! It was marinated to remove the sharp spiciness that it usually delivers.

Kumamoto Grapefruit Salad with Kurama Ebi prawns - HKD188

Oh my, how could the Ebi prawns be this sweet and tender? I thought it was honey glazed! The Kumamoto grapefruit underneath was so sweet that you thought it was an orange! The asparagus was super crisp and the shiitake mushroom was fat and juicy. A very nice salad dish overall!

Grilled Long Eggplant with Garlic Miso, Sweet Onions & Bonito Flakes - HKD128

A light veggie dish of today. The eggplant was fresh but was quite bland in taste. The flavour was brought up by the tangy garlic miso sauce. The bonito flakes on top gave some nice flavour to the asparagus too.

Chicken Tsukune with Kumamoto Shiitake Mushroom and Shiitake Mushrooms stuffed with Minced Amakusa Chicken - HKD128

The skewers were delivered with a lovely smoky aroma floating in the air. The chicken tsukune skewer was tender with a good fat balance. The mushroom was fat and juicy with a tsukune paste added on top. The tsukune had a different texture from the skewers, it was quite crunchy as some soft bones were mixed in it

Amakusa Chicken Skewer with Pepper Miso or Japanese Fermented Tofu Miso - HKD108/2skewers

This chicken skewer was no ordinary chicken skewer but a very interesting one. It is not the skewer where you enjoy the juicy fat oil of chicken from the grill, but the full flavour of chicken and it's meatiness. The texture was very muscular with a good chew. The muscularity probably comes from the size of the chicken as it was as big as a turkey!

Kumamoto Beef Fillet "Kousouyaki" - HKD428

This Kumamoto beef fillet was a melt on you mouth beef fillet with fat oil swirling on your palate! One utterly satisfying beef.

Seiro Soba - HKD88

Once again, the buckwheat soba! You simply cannot diner in Gonpachi without slurping their Housemade soba! You can read more about the soba on my previous review "Gonpachi - Iwate Fair" or "Gonpachi - Premium Handmade Soba & Sumiyaki Binchotan Grill".

Unagi Rice in Stone Pot- HKD138

The unagi rice was beautiful and priced only at HKD138. A super great deal I reckon as most unagi rice is overly priced in Hong Kong. The unagi cut was thick and was very fat and tender with a good oil content. The rice was quite nice with some crispy burnt rice at the pot bottom!

Cheesecake Soufflé with Fresh Kumamoto Strawberry And Green Tea Ice-cream - HKD98

Finally comes the dessert, the cheese cake soufflé was brought back directly from Kumamoto! The cheese cake was light, fluffy and cheesy. A great light dessert to end the meal!

The promotion of Kumamoto is available now until 15th May 2014. Book you table if you are interested ! =)
