I went for Yun Nan noodles with my colleagues for a quick lunch. Even though the restaurant wasn't among the popular ones around Wanchai, there were quite a queue at 1pm.
Beef Brisket Rice Noodles with Soybean Paste $30
I chose a preset ingredients bowl since choosing sides usually give me headaches. The bowl was very savory, as the seasoning leaves gave a nice strong flavoured broth. The broth was in deep red colour so I couldn't really see what was in the bowl. However it was pretty fun to fish around the bowl to see what's still left.
The broth was further enhanced by the medium-less spicy sauce. I personally reckon spicy is one of the essence of Yun Nan noodles. Even having it medium-less spicy, the bowl was actually quite spicy but still acceptable. The spiciness was one that can have it without drinking water.
The Beef brisket was thinly sliced which looked very delicate. Most beef brisket were lean meat, the fat portion was around 9:1. With this little fat content I expected hard texture but were delighted to taste an unexpected soft and tenderness in the briskets! I guess the thickness did help a bit.
The noodles were cooked to give a soft and smooth texture in the spicy broth. There were also lots of sides in the broth. There were heaps of thick fresh spring onions, very nice and chewy. Bean sprouts were meticulously prepared with the root ends removed. The soybean paste was everywhere around the bowl, the portion was generous. Yet it was a bit too salty to enjoy.
Many of my colleagues like to lunch in here, as it is quick and tasty. I just hope they could offer some lunch sets or drinks offer so I could get a drink along with the noodles. P.S. They don't even give us water or tea!
