Cravingness: ★★★☆☆
There are quite a few new restaurant excitements in Kowloon Bay recently. From Ippudo and Dondonya a few months ago, to Coco Curry Ichibanya and Pho Tai. Pho Tai in particular excited me the most, since I got seduced by their drooling aroma every morning I pass by their shop, plus I heard their pho is nice. It is literally not possible to dine at Pho Tai during lunch hour, so I went in after 2pm instead.
I am usually more impressed if the broth comes in with some bean sprouts, lime and chilli, which in this case, Pho Tai did serve them. The broth generally had more depth than other pho places in Hong Kong but the beef taste was very strong and hence it tasted more like a beef broth than a pho broth to me. When my bowl was served, the beef was all cooked and they were a bit too lean for my liking. I had to add HKD4 for having vermicelli in my pho, but it tastes nicer so whatever.
I had the rice paper rolls as a set which was quite a good deal. The set came with two Lemongrass Pork Rice Paper Rolls. The rice paper thin but very hard to chew. There were marinated pork, peanuts and vermicelli in it. The pork was quite bland in taste, the rolls definitely need some fish sauce to give taste.
Looking pretty, the Iced Rambutan Juice was quite artificial in colour and was overly sweet in taste. The rambutan was juicy and sweet and was stuffed with pineapple which was very interesting.
Surrounded by inexpensive local Cha Chan Tang, I wonder if people find this lunch set priced at HKD60 is a good bargain or not. I personally reckon it is acceptable and I will definitely come back if I crave for some Pho.
