It is restaurant week again, meaning a week of crazy dinning. Fofo by El Willy is the first restaurant I went this time. It is not my first time dining at Fofo by El Willy. I had it once last year for dinner at NY count down and it wasn't too amazing given its price. Since the 9 courses restaurant week menu looked interesting, I decided to give Fofo by El Willy another chance.
Fofo by El Willy offers contemporary Spanish at a sleek setting and romantic ambience. The restaurant is mostly furnished in white colour compliments with a light beige wood tiled floor and accent with a colourful stripe sofa at the far back of the restaurant. Remember to reserve your table by the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the hectic but beautiful central city view.
The Dining City Restaurant Week Menu features a 9 courses menu priced at HKD438 which is a fairly good deal. The courses are pretty diverse with both hot and cold appetisers, sea and land dishes, a paella-like dishes and a platter of 3 desserts to end the night. Sounds like a lot of food, but be warned everything comes in small portion.
This probably is the best dish Fofo offered for the whole night. The olives was meaty and sweet in taste. The Gherkins was sour and crisp. Yet the most amazing pickle on the plate was this pickled garlic where no garlic taste could be tasted and the texture was like extremely crisp bamboo shoot.
The Artesanal air dry beef was my favourite dish of the night. The air dry beef had an intense taste and was not as savoury as other air dry hams. It also had a long lingering aftertaste. The air dry beef complimented the crunchy tomato toast well by bring up the tomato flavour of the toast.
The smoked salmon was sandwiched with two thin airy crisps topped with some trout eggs & oil caviar. Even the salmon was quite smoky and smooth, the dish was overall quite bland in taste.
The scallop was extremely smooth and fresh like sashimi cuts. The avocado and shallot purée was creamy and smooth, but the flavours was too strong and overpowered the scallop taste.
I hesitated about the dish as white asparagus is a winter ingredient, yet the white asparagus tasted great and sweet. This dish was a cold dish with sweet piquillos and mayonnaise foam but the spinach was a bit bitter. I generally like this dish.
The prawn was nicely grilled but not particularly sweet and bouncy. The sauce was quite garlicky but the overall taste was boring.
This romesco sauce on the Lubina sea bass tasted like the Chinese Dish "Streamed Cod fish with fried soy bean (豆酥魚)" but a milder version of it. The flavour was strong with bean taste. The sea bass was tender but was not smooth enough.
The Iberico pork was super chewy and caused a bit of a pain to my jaw. Despite the texture, it was quite flavourful with the sauce. The white bean mash was quite smooth in texture but bland.
I would not have guessed the seafood in the middle of the juicy rice was lobster as it was quite small in size. The lobster tasted kind of bitter with some alcohol taste. The texture was like crab meat, which was what I thought it was. The juicy rice tasted like paella but much more saucy. The sauce was robust and rich in flavour with lots of mushrooms in it. The paella was in general too rich in taste for me.
The dessert platter probably rank the best of tonight in taste and texture wise.
Churros - The chirps was crispy and fluffy! I wish there is a thick chocolate sauce for me to dip in :(
Milk pudding - The milk pudding was smooth, bouncy , milky and creamy.
White chocolate mousse with strawberry - The white chocolate mousse was mildly sweet and was not very chocolaty, but the texture was so smooth it almost dissolved instantly on your palate. Right underneath the mousse was a layer of duo-texture, crispy and soft pastry layer penetrated with strawberry sauce. Delicious!
As I mentioned earlier, the portion of the 9 courses was rather small and even a small eater as I am, I did not feel particularly full. Above all, the overall flavour was not very complex or interesting. If you are looking for delicious Spanish food, try 22 Ships, Tapeo or BCN.
