Don't know if you have seen a red signboard with word "Van Gogh Kitchen" on Hennesy Road before, I saw that every morning on my way to work in my previous job. Van Gogh kitchen, a homey Italian restaurant at Causeway Bay opened by a Canadian Migrant after his success in his first dream cafe - Small Potato. Expanding his party themed empire, Van Gogh Kitchen was setup and was positioned as a mid range Italian Restaurant offering good food in a comfy environment.
The furnishing of Van Gogh Kitchen is interesting as it's interior was designed according to a drawing of Van Gogh's - The red walls, yellow wooden floor, the yellow lighting and the pool table in the middle of the room. Despite the setup, tens of Van Gogh drawings with golden frames were also hang on the wall to align with the theme.
We went tonight under an invitation and recommended by Van Gogh Kitchen owner to try their dinner special for two. The dinner special is a 7 course meal serves with a glass of wine and a cup of coffee or tea, priced at HKD998 + 10% service charge.
The wine we had tonight was very light body and flat in taste. We were quite disappointed that it was a pretty boring red.
The Chef's Salad can roughly separately into three parts - parma ham with melon, smoked salmon with apple salad, crab meat salad. My favourite was the smoked salmon with apple salad, it was very refreshing and sweet. The parma ham with melon was beautifully wrapped and tasted pretty good. The crab meat did not taste too fresh to me so I only had a bite.
The dish was nicely presented. The pan fried foie gras was nicely seared with caramel crust and made slightly crispy, the inner was delicious with a smooth and creamy texture. The pineapple was nicely paired with the foie gras to balance out the strong flavour of the foie gras. The foie gras would be perfect if they sear it in a stronger fire and in less time, since the caramelised crust was made a bit too rough now.
The wild mushroom soup was in generous portion. It was made with porchini, mushroom and cream. There were mushroom bits within the soup but the soup is still a bit watery to me, I would like it to be thicker. The taste was quite dull on the palate, perhaps more cream should be added in.
House baguette was served along with the soup but it was hard like stone...
The pizza, as the boss said was in Canadian style. I have not been to Canada before, so I could not comment if their pizza is in Canadian style or even the taste or look of Canadian style. This mushroom pizza had a thin crispy crust topped with mushroom, crispy parma ham and rockets with tomato sauce. taste wise it was pretty good.
We were told the lamb were fed with red wine residue, hence the lamb has a less fat distribution and tasted less gamey. I actually like lamb that is very fat and has a strong gamey taste. Hence I did not like this lamb very much. The house fries with pesto aioli on the other hand was AMAZING! I have never had fries in this texture! The skin was quite chewy with a soft inner. With the compliment of house made pesto aioli, the fries were moreishing!
The presentation of the roasted beef kebab was quite breathe taking. The chef grills the kebab in front of you with fire shooting here and there. The roasted beef had a smokey aroma and nice char taste at the crust. The beef tenderloin was however a bit too chewy and lean for my liking.
The molten chocolate cake was pretty nice with a soft runny chocolate centre. The cake was mildly sweet and spongy. The vanilla ice-cream can enhance the sweetness of the chocolate cake, plus adding an interesting element of cold food on hot food A great dessert to end the night.
The 7 course dinner menu is a fair deal for two as each dish's portion was pretty big. You sure will get full after the main. After your filling meal, you can also play some pool or take some nice photos at the swing! The back drop was very nice :)
