TAPAGRIA - Lively Tapas Restaurant & Bar

Price: $$$
Cravingness: ★★★☆☆1/2

The Spanish fad has been going on for quite a while but the heat never stops. Tapagria, a recently opened tapas bar opened by Hong Kong actress Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) at The One Tsim Sha Tsui is expected to create a scene and takes a great share at the Market. A spanish food lover as I am, were excited about the opening and cannot wait to try.

Located on the 18th floor, Tapagria is meant to offer a panoramic view of the remarkable cityscape of Hong Kong at day or night time. With floor to ceiling window, you are view the cityscape no matter you are sitting indoor or outdoor.

The furnishing is modern and fill with lively vibe. There are curvy tapas bar tables surrounding the open kitchen and a DJ that spins at 10.30pm every Friday and Saturday Night. Also I love the visual fireplace above the open kitchen, making the restaurant more fierce.

BCN (Barcelona)

The name Tapagria means Tapas & Sangria, hence apart from their numerous delicious tapas, Tapagria also offers up to 65 different types of Sangria in house. The making of Sangria isn't too hard but offering 65 kinds is a wow. Tonight we were lucky to savour two. The red sangria on the right is BCN (Barcelona) which is a mix of Chambord, raspberry Vodka, raspberries and blackberries. It was fruity with a weak alcohol content. A easy to drink sangria but a rather pricey one.

Mixed Seafood and Meat Paella, with Red Prawn

Another specialty of Tapagria is this enormous Paella Pan that serves paella everyday. It was set next to the Open Kitchen and at the door front to showcase the master skill of Chef. The chef has been working in another renowned Spanish restaurant in Macau before continuing his career in Tapagria. How exciting it is to watch a big pan of paella cooked in front of you!

Our Paella of the night was a mixed seafood and pork paella, served with red prawns on top. The red prawns is an optional toppings and is priced at HKD48 each. The red prawn definitely worths the price as it added a sweet note to the paella. The Paella itself was cooked with bomba rice which was fat and juicy, savoury with the flavour of squid ink and seafood but not too wet.

Homemade bread accompanied with fresh tomato and garlic DIYLS Style "Do It Yourself Like Spanish!"
Hand crafted 48 months Joselito Iberico Ham

The 48 months Joselito Iberico ham was aromatic and savoury with good marbling. Pairing with a crunchy tomato toast but with a weak tomato taste and aroma.

Seafood Cocktail in Olive Oil

A small plate of octopus, shrimp and clams served with olive oil and lemon wedges. The octopus was quite chewy and sweet in taste.

Chicken Croquettes

The chicken croquettes were delicious!!! It tasted like Japanese croquettes with crispy crust and creamy inner.

“Silver Glass” Crispy toast with roasted vegetables and anchovies

I am usually not a big fan of anchovies, but this was rather nice. The anchoives was salty, tender and smooth, it went well with the crispy toast.

Andalusian style deep fried baby squid

The baby squid is a typical Spanish tapas that you can find in any Spanish restaurant. The crust was dry without greasiness, the squid was alright but not silky enough. This dish priced at HKD195  which I think was very pricey for this portion and this definitely did not live up to any expectation.

Slow cooked crispy Suckling Pig with caramelized apple and honey mustard sauce

I am a suckling pig lover but I was a bit disappointed at Tapagria's suckling pig. The skin was not crispy enough, the meat was tender but on the lean side and lacking the evil palate melting fats that I was hoping for.

Scramble egg with black pudding meat and potato straws

I am not a big fan of black pudding, I dislike its fishy taste. The black pudding here was made like a scramble egg. The flavour was quite pungent in taste. I like the crispy potato straws served at the bottom more.

Clams in seafood sauce

This was a very nice dish. First the clams were sweet, soft and chewy. The broth was sweet with a tangy seafood flavour and a hint of wine in it. YUM!

"Mango brick” Mango mousse cake with fresh mango cubes and blueberry sauce

Our first dessert was a mango cake, I thought it would be some sort of sponge cake but it turned out to be a gelatinous cake. The condensed cake has a strong mango taste but tasted more like mango gummy to me. It would probably tastes nicer if there is mango meats in it. Also no blueberry sauce was found but I don't see blueberry matching with Mango anyway.

Chocolate mousse with banana and passion fruit duo (sorbet & jelly)

The chocolate mousse was rather sweet and was very chocolaty. It was slightly balanced by the sweet and sour passion fruit, but still quite sweet for me.

We tried quite a few tapas tonight, most of them were great but not exceptional and in general quite pricey. For sure, if you dine in Tapagria, you are also paying for the marvelous cityscape and the lively vibe of the restaurant. If you want to try Tapagria, I recommend their Tapas lunch of 3 tapas and a dessert which offers everyday at a price of HKD168 + 10% SC.
