Cravingness: ★★★☆☆
Although it's the big season for hairy crab, we still miss the tangy Hong Kong Style spicy crab (aka Typhoon Shelter Crab). We bought a deal for a set dinner menu at Hee Kee Crab General in Groupon earlier and decided to go tonight.
I have seen the bright red door front of Hee Kee many times but never once dine there myself. There are numerous branches of Hee Kee in Hong Kong, the one I went to is next to the Goose Bridge Causeway Bay, close to another famous spicy crab place called Under The Bridge Spicy Crab.
The 8 courses menu for four is in fairly good portion, everything is able to share on the table and filled us. We actually went in a group of five tonight, so we ordered two extra dishes.
Service is very good at Hee Kee Crab General. Staff are all very attentive, and every time you want something, a staff is always nearby. Hygiene is good, lots of napkins and wet wraps are given, dishes were changed multiple times the night we went to keep things clean. Every dish came in a flash in piping hot freshness. A very efficient restaurant indeed.
To commence the dinner, we started with an off the course menu deep-fried Squid with salt and pepper seasoned breading. The dish came in hot, so the breading was very crispy. The squid was fresh, bouncy and chewy with a tangy salt and pepper flavour. Love!
I like pig's feet as I love the collagen that goes with it. The flavour was great, it was sweet with a hint of liquor taste. The tendons were soft and chewy. I ate the pig's feet with my hands and it truly was finger licking food.
The dish name in Chinese is actually named Vegetarian Goose. I once thought the dish was a goose dish, apparently totally ignored the word "vegetarian". The deep fried bean curd rolls was fairly good. Sered hot with crispy pastries and chewy, tasteful fillings.
The mussel dish came in with a drooling look. The mussels were fat but rather rough in texture. The sauce was okay but it was on the sweet side.
Even with no expectation, the barbecue pork was rather disappointing. True the meat was tender, but the sauce was bad and lacked of the honey charred crust that I love.
The highlight finally came and got everyone excited! We ordered crazy spicy and it made me had runny nose and fire blowing mouth. Having said that, the spiciness was a happy spicy. However if to compare with Under the Bridge Spicy Crab, the flavour was not as tangy and garlicky. Moreover, the portion seemed little, we thought some legs were missing from the garlic sea. I hope they didn't try to deceive us
The spinach with garlic in soup tasted good and was in generous portion. I like the fresh juicy spinach and savoury broth.
The steamed chicken was actually my favourite of the night. The chicken was juicy and tender with strong chicken flavour. The chicken tasted great especially with the ginger and scallions sauce.
Rice is something important when you have spicy crab in order not to let the heavenly delicious deep fried garlic and the fermented soybean spices (hereby called mixture) go to waste. Mixing in the mixture with the rice greatly enhance the texture and flavour of the rice! Imagine every bite with a mouthful of spiciness, tangy garlicky and sweet flavour. YUM!
The dishes were not bad in Crab General, price was set appropriately in rather good deal. However if you truly loves Chilli Crab (aka again Typhoon Shelter Crab), I would recommend Under the Bridge across the bridge or Hing Kee (避風塘興記) in Tsim Sha Tsui instead, the Chilli Crab there tastes MUCH nicer.
