When I thought Korean fast food culture WAS a fad in Hong Kong, shops are still opening everywhere! I went to Hungry Korean at Causeway Bay tonight for a quick dinner. I think it is a branch as I have seen one at Tsim Sha Tsui years ago.
The store was petite and hence very packed. Yet you do not need to find your own table as your will be assigned to a table upon ordering. You just simply line up and ordered your food at the counter, be seated and your food will be delivered to your table.
The bees bibimbap looked pretty promising but tasted otherwise. The portion was huge with loads of bean sprouts, mushroom, scallions, red carrots, onions, beef and rice topped with sesame seeds and a raw egg.
The base was totally crusted from the high heat of the cast iron bowl which got me very excited. It tasted however pretty horrible with a stone hard texture with no smokey aroma. The rice was fat but was cooked soft and turned very mushy in texture.
The Bibimbap was actually pretty bland in taste. The only thing that carried flavour was the marinated beef, but it was very stiff in texture. I added loads of the Korean chilli sauce into my bibimbap but it still tasted pretty bland to me. There was spiciness in the bowl but the bibimbap was boring.
I was expecting something nicer than simply tap water with a hint of ginger taste. How disgusting the ea was as I still tasted the rawness from the hot water.
It did not come across my mind once dining at Hungry Korean when I saw it many times in Tsim Sha Tsui years ago as I thought the logo looks very tacky. I probably should have trust my instinct and stick to it. There is no way I am giving Hungry Korean a second chance.
