Yi Yue | Not So Taiwan Style As Its Name Suggested

My family and I wanted a quick tea in Prince Edward this afternoon, we found this restaurant around the corner and seemingly looked nicer than the ones around. Although there weren't anyone dinning in the restaurant, we went in as the pictures on their food stand looked nice.

Minced Beef Rice
Since Yi Yue served typical Taiwanese food, we already had the dishes we want in mind upon seating. I skemmed the menu and saw a dinner set for two, athough there were 4 of us, we ordered the set anyway. The set was a very good bargain. It had 2 soups, 2 starters, 2 main courses, 2 drinks and a veggie at a price of $108. We originally had no idea about the soups until it arrived. The soup was in normal Chaa Chan Ten standard, nothing special about it. Let switched our focus to the foods that are on the menu.

1) Lui Shui Pork Ear 卥水豬耳
A So-so dish, something to chew on. The Lui Shui sauce, except saltiness, didn't give much flavour at all. The Pork Ear on the other hand was pretty chewy, which was nice. However I am not sure whether anyone could make a bad Pork Ear, its chewiness should be something comes naturally on Pork Ear.

2) Salty Deep Fried Chicken 鹽酥雞
I had much expectation on this dish and it was this dish which dragged me into the restaurant. The chicken was nicely deep fried, giving a crispy coating. The deep fried chicken had the scent of the Saltiness but was not salty enough when compared to the ones I had in Taiwan Night Food Market. The chicken was not seasoned, but the meat itself was quite tender. Another so-so dish, no–t that bad.

3) braised beef noodles soup 紅燒牛肉麵
Having my first sipped of the soup, I had to say it was nicely stewed. The noodles was something ordinary, the thin kind and was cooked to give a right softness. The braised beef was too lean, but was nicely braised to give a nice taste. There were only a tiny bit of thinly sliced green onion which was very unsatisfying as Taiwanese food usually comes with lots of fresh nice green onions. Another minor criticism was that there wasn’t any red carrot in the dish when the reference picture on the wall had one.

4) Minced Beef Rice in Taiwanese Style 台式卥肉飯
The dish appeared to be not very appetizing when it was first served on the desk. I guess it was because the cucumber didn’t really match the bowl and there were also something on the halfly sliced egg. The present of the two sliced of fatty braised beef on the side was pretty weird too. The rice was on the hard side and there was too much brown saucing which made the rice too salty. The minced beef had no flavoured at all. The egg on the other hand was quite nice. Not a flavoring bowl of rice.

5) Veggie
The veggie had nice green fresh leaves and looked very appealing. With the soya sauce, the veggie actually tasted very nice. Personally I reckon it was a bit too oily but my family polished it off pretty quickly so I guess the oiliness was kinda acceptable.

6) Hot Tarot Bubble Tea
My sister and I were amazed to see the colour of this Tarot Bubble Tea, as we all had a perception that all tarot flavoured drinks are in purple colour. The drink had a strong nice tarot taste but was too sweet. The bubble was nice and chewy.

I personally reckon Yi Yue's food quality were very reasonable to the price it was offering, but had failed to give a Taiwanese taste. If you are looking for a filling and money-saving lunch or dinner, Yi Yue Taiwan Stylish Cuisine would be the choice for you. Yet to be honest, it really does not worth a try.
